iOS 11 beta gives us the clearest hint yet at wireless charging on the iPhone 8
June 29, 2017
The most talked-about features of the iPhone 8 have so far been the OLED display, Touch ID sensor possibly embedded underneath it, and wireless charging capability. Apple is said to be working on a wireless charging technology for the iPhone 8, and past leaks have suggested the same. But now the clearest hint yet has been spotted on iOS 11 beta.
The sound file with the title “engage_power.caf” was first posted on YouTube (spotted by MacRumors). Why this was highlighted was because this audio presumably related to charging was different from the audio indicating charging that is present in iOS currently. The sound file for the charging tone present in iOS 10 now is named “connect_power.caf” and is distinctly different from the “engage_power.caf” audio file discovered now. It is suggested that this sound file could be used for the iPhone 8 and may be for wireless charging.
This is however only a speculation with all bets made on wireless charging for the iPhone 8. Moreover, the report states that there are many sound files in iOS 10 and iOS 11 which remain unused. Although it is highly expected that the iPhone 8 will come with wireless charging, the technology that will be used is still doubtful. Some reports suggest that Apple may not opt for long-range wireless charging, which relies on radio waves but comes with complications like slower charging rate. Apple is instead expected to go with inductive wireless charging which essentially requires a charging pad. The same technology is used in charging the Apple Watch.
Along with the iPhone 8, the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus are also expected to come with wireless charging, as predicted by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. A recent quote by the Robert Hwang, CEO of Wistron, one of Apple’s iPhone assemblers, also stated that the iPhone 7s Plus will feature wireless charging. The possibility of the iPhone 8, iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus featuring wireless charging increases with reports of Apple shifting to glass backs this year. It remains to be seen what Apple does opt for finally and if the next generation iPhones will come with wireless charging or not.
